What constitutes a really good day?

What a great day!

A lot of good has come from needing to stay at home. Zoom meetings and webinars are here to stay. It’s so very much easier and quicker to attend an 8:30 AM board meeting from home! Our home is 4 minutes outside the city limits in a beautiful secluded valley. The river is below us, Crystal Peak is visible from my writing nook.May be an image of nature and mountain

The most glorious nature trail is just out our garden gate. It takes about 20 minutes to walk and passes by the river, thorough woods and a pasture.  All but 3 of us in the 11 houses live here full-time – beyond peaceful and the perfect place for our dogs to safely run free.

Before my 8:30 board meeting I’d: dressed, had breakfast, made the bed, picked up my mess in the kitchen, done my daily yoga and Tie Chi. After the zoom meeting the dogs and I went on our first walk of the day.

Throughout the day I alternated writing up an interview I have been working on for our newspaper and listening to the recordings of a writing conference I took this weekend which before the pandemic was held in New York. One of the blessings to come from the pandemic is having zoom meetings since we can’t safely meet in person and having all of the sessions recorded. The recordings mean we can ‘attend’ everything and do not miss anything. All through the day, when I couldn’t sit any longer – the dogs and I walked again and again! It was a most enjoyable warmly teasing day that we know doesn’t mean winter weather is finished. Though these happy days when I can open the French doors to the sunroom – almost bringing the garden inside – are thoroughly enjoyed.

Bill, our UPS driver (do you know that name of your UPS driver J) presence’s was made know by Hope. We exchanged pleasantries over the gorgeous day as I received my package.

I started a load of laundry and continued working. It’s going on to 5:00 now. The sun has slipped behind the mountain. I’ve closed the French doors and added wood to the fire.

Most days are not so productive but it sure does feel good. Generally, the busier I am the more I accomplish. Today was a well balanced day. I still have aspirations and working towards their accomplishments makes me happy.

My son called me this evening (as he regularly does) – the cherry on top my day.

My husband is the engineer at the electric company and as an essential worker has gotten both vaccinations. Lake City is going to be ready to go with my age group next month.

Other than writing for our newspaper I’m not working my usual Lake City jobs because of COVID. This has given me time to attend writing workshops and conferences on-line through my writing organizations. I finished writing Mountain Mutts – Joy’s Tale (along with a teacher’s packet) and was asked to read it (virtually) to the 5th graders at our community school. Their higher thinking questions along with asking me to write more stories like this was beyond so very encouraging. I am working on how to get Mountain Mutts – Joy’s Tale into the hands of teachers, school librarians and counselors. I was able to put a middle grade book I’ve also been working on a long time into the hands of editors (as did many, many other writers) who attended the (virtual New York winter conference) – I wouldn’t have gone to New York anyway – the virtual attendance was world-wide and of course much bigger than attending in person would have been and so much more cost-effective.

So I’m really, really good keeping physically, emotionally and mentally fit as I walk the mountains, photograph my world, write and enjoy my husband and our dogs up here in the mountains.

These good days are to be remembered. What does a great day for you look like? What makes you happy?

  1. Julie, your perspective is always a pleasure to read. Today, I find joy in what use to be normal but now seems so foreign. My work no longer looks like a war zone and I can see the sun shining on the horizon but yet this feels so unreal.
I’m still working overtime in the hospital as well as the covid vaccine clinic. In my downtime, I have discovered I enjoy learning to paint. I would have never attempted this in the past but with today’s world of virtual learning all things are possible. ♥️
